Five years of lessons to launch a lifetime in community.

My days in Chung Hua were best experienced outside the classroom – marching with bandmates under hot sun and humid rain, learning Chinese by pinyin to act in dramas, writing minutes and reports for clubs, preparing for concerts, food fairs, sports days. The list goes on.

I had gathered earlier on that participating meant gaining skills in organising, problem-solving, time management, persistence and discipline. Activities helped build confidence and independence on top of the work ethic academics required.

By joining in, you get to discover your interests beyond standard subjects and books, express yourself creatively, nurture every curiosity to your heart’s content while having fun!

It was after leaving school and looking back that it struck me – the largest thread which weaved its way through everything was a sense of community. None of the experiences would have mattered if not for the people. To have your friends in sync with every project, script, song and laugh is going to help you connect with yourself and others. Even those whose connections you lost, help you reflect and want to be better.

Character, values and connection are what I discuss and assist others with professionally as a clinical psychologist. Above that, the person I want to be, the values I try to embody and the relationships in my life are what I look forward to everyday.

As much as the academics and activities will set you up materially, the people you meet and cherish will be with you for life. And when your world gets a little bigger after school, it is these friends who will be a reminder of the days you jumped out of bed at 5.30am to do the things you love!

Happy 70th Anniversary Chung Hua!
